Biography:

My teaching and research focus on environmental sociology, sociology of agriculture and food systems, and contemporary im/migration politics.

Through my research projects, I investigate the ways in which state institutions reinforce environmental and other inequalities, as well as innovative ways in which social movement groups struggle to redress those dynamics. I have largely pursued this interest through the lens of environmental justice and an empirical case study of pesticide drift in California’s immigrant farmworking communities. In that project, I unravel the role of the environmental regulatory state in perpetuating and naturalizing environmental injustices and showcases the efforts of activist groups to contest and redress those dynamics. I have also begun to research the relationship between the state and oppression of racialized groups through my recent research on immigration policy enforcement within the United States. I have taken on this task through a case study of Latino workers in Wisconsin’s dairy farm sector, in which I investigate how these workers and their families experience authorities’ e fforts to monitor and regulate unauthorized migrants.

I am a faculty affiliate of numerous programs at UW-Madison (including the Program on Agricultural Technology Studies, the Agroecology Graduate Program, the Holtz Center for Science and Technology, and the Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies). I have served on the Wisconsin Governor's Council of Migrant Labor and the Wisconsin Migrant Coalition.
