Information for prospective students- Thanks for your interest in the joint Graduate Program in the Departments of Sociology and Rural Sociology. Please read the following information if you are considering contacting me as a potential graduate advisor.

- I encourage you to communicate directly with the graduate coordinator (please email gradinfo@ssc.wisc.edu) about program and application matters.
- In reviewing applications, I am most interested in students with strong academic backgrounds who are interested in demographic and spatial dimensions of inequality and urbanization. My research interests include migration and population redistribution, inequality, land use, and spatial data analysis. Examples of the research pursued by students that I have worked with include:
- the distribution of destination development in the rural United States and its relationship to social inequality,
- the role of local context in shaping national-level policies related to the expansion of railroads in late 19th-century North Dakota, and
- the sociological factors shaping the spatial distribution of water quality in Ghana
At present, I have a research grant to support one graduate student for 9 months beginning in the fall of 2008. Additional graduate funding opportunities are available on a highly competitive basis, including the following university-funded Fellowships, Title VI Foreign Language Areas Studies (http://www.intl-institute.wisc.edu/fellow/FLAS.htm), and CHANGE Fellowships (http://www.sage.wisc.edu:16080/igert/fellowship_application.html). Teaching assistantships are also sometimes available. Please contact the graduate coordinator regarding these funding opportunities. The staff can also help you identify other potential faculty advisors if our interests do not align.
When contacting me, please include the following in your email or letter:
- A detailed statement (2 to 3 paragraphs) of your research and professional interests, your research experience, and why you want to attend graduate school
- the names and institutions of 2-3 people you will ask for letters of recommendation, and
- your undergraduate major, university, GPA and GRE scores (including your percentile scores, not just the raw scores).
